He was raised in Colbert County, Alabama before the family relocated to Winchester, Indiana in 1953. As a youngster, along with his sister, Rose, Travis would go to the fields and pick cotton. At the end of a long day, they would reward themselves with an RC Cola and a Moon Pie.

After high school, Travis worked at Anchor Hocking, Sheller Globe (1966-1984), RCA and retiring from Randall Textron of Indianapolis in 1999. During his tenure at Sheller Globe, he became an injection plastic mold specialist. As his interest in this field increased, he attended classes at Ball State University. While at Randall Textron he was an Injection Mold Plastics Engineer.

Being an avid sports fan, Travis spent retirement watching Alabama Football, Indianapolis Colts, Indiana University Basketball and Football, and the Indiana Fever.
