Roger Eugene Kerns

Roger Eugene Kerns, age 87, of Union City, IN, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on February 4th, 2022.

Roger was born to Benjamin and Henrietta Kerns on November 9th, 1934 in Celina, Ohio.  He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend.

Roger married the love of his life, Bettie Jo Snyder at the United Methodist Church in Fort Recovery on June 6th, 1953.  Roger and Bettie were travelers, and he was sure to tell many stories about their adventures across the country.  He was proud to have visited all 50 states as well as many countries.  Roger was owner of Kerns & Smith Builders, helping to develop Union City and the surrounding communities in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.  He was a lifelong grain and livestock farmer earning many awards for his work in soil conservation.  In retirement, he was an avid woodworker and carver.  He took every opportunity to share his love of the craft.  His most cherished time was spent with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Roger was a leader of the Boy Scouts of America for 34 years earning the Golden Eagle Award in 1973 and the Silver Beaver Award in 1974.  He was a Mason and a Shriner for 50+ years where he enjoyed parading with the jeepsters.  Roger was also a member of the Kiwanis Club where he served as President.

Roger is survived by his beloved wife Bettie Jo Kerns and their seven children:  Sheryl Fidler, Tanya (Kurt) Carpenter, Donna (Rob) MacDougall, Kevin (Monica) Kerns, C. Lynna Spence, R. Allen (Katie) Kerns, and Thomas (Jamie) Kerns.  As well as their 16 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Henrietta Kerns, and his brother Aubrey Kerns.

I am so saddened by this loss. For 25 years now, Roger has treated me like one of his own children, and I loved him very much. He always knew that I would share my candy with him, and he would follow me anywhere hoping that I would give in and split my candy with him. Truly a life well lived and a fantastic father in law.
