Philip "Phil" Reid Wasson

February 22, 1934 — May 8, 2024

Union City, IN

Philip (Phil) Reid Wasson, 90, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at Life Care Center of LaGrange, in LaGrange, IN, after a brief battle with cancer.

The second of two sons, Philip was born at home on February 22, 1934, to the late Harold and Fern (Shelley) Wasson in Union City, IN. He was delivered by Dr. Reid, from whom he received his middle name.

In 1952, he graduated from Wayne High School and was the last surviving boy of his graduating class. After graduation, he worked at Commercial Printing Company until he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served full-time from September 1, 1956, to August 31, 1958, then in the Army Reserves until August 31, 1962.  While stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, he married Peggy Ann Nuckols, of Union City, OH, on December 21, 1957. They started married life in a two-room apartment in Killeen, Texas near Fort Hood, and were married for just over 65 years. Peggy preceded him in death in January 2023.

Upon discharge from the regular Army, they moved back to Union City, IN, where Phil resumed his job at Commercial Printing Company. He stayed there until the fall of 1987, when he took a position as an electrician at Anchor Glass in Winchester, IN. He held various positions at both the Winchester plant and for Anchor Glass Corporate in Tampa, FL. He remained with them until he retired as the Electrical Maintenance Supervisor in 1997. After retirement, he continued to work for Wood Electric, Shockney Electric, and the Brethren Home. He was a lifelong member of South Salem Church of Christ, where he led singing for over 50 years. He served as both a Deacon and an Elder, taught Sunday School, and continued to sing on Sunday mornings until earlier this year. He was also very involved with Camp Christian in Houston, OH, where he served on the board. For eight years, he and Peggy greeted new Camp Christian campers as they worked the canteen during camper check-in on Sunday afternoons.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Peggy, and his brother, James (Jim) Wasson.

Survivors include his son, Brent (Laura) Wasson, step-granddaughters, Natalie (Dustin) Lewis, Michelle (Matt) Stewart, Christina (Tyler) Muryn, Victoria (Dakota) Lionheart, six step-great-grandchildren, one niece, and one nephew.
