In Loving Memory of Nelson Eddie “Ed” Bateman July 4, 1948 – June 26, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Nelson Eddie “Ed” Bateman, 76, of Union City, Indiana, who died on June 26, 2025, as the result of a tragic grain accident on his beloved farm.
Born on July 4, 1948, in Union City, Indiana, Ed lived a life rooted in faith, hard work, and a deep love for his family and community. As a lifelong farmer, he poured his energy into the land, faithfully cultivating the fields that sustained both his household and those around him. His hands were calloused from years of honest labor, and his heart was full of kindness and generosity.
Ed was a proud graduate of The Ohio State University and a devoted fan of the Buckeyes, a passion he carried with him throughout his life.
He was a devoted elder at Harrisville Congregational Christian Church, where he served his church family with humility and compassion. A man of strong faith, he extended his commitment to service through his involvement in Men for Missions, participating in several mission trips and sharing Christ’s love through action and word.
Outside the fields and the church, Ed found joy and freedom on the open road. He was a proud member of Chapter T Motorcycle Club of Portland, Indiana, where he built lasting friendships and embraced the spirit of adventure. He also loved to travel, often combining his passion for exploration with his desire to serve.
He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Marilyn, whom he married on July 18, 1999; his children: Amanda (Bob) Tinsley of Modock, IN; Patricia (Kevin) Austin of Fairborn, OH; and Jeff (Annie) Wickersham of Washington, IN. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to McKinzie (Andrew) Lahman, Taylor Bowen, Melissa, Katherine, and Peyton Tinsley, and Karsyn and Knox Wickersham. His great-granddaughters, Emma Trantanella and Ava Lahman, brought him tremendous joy.
He is also survived by his siblings: Christine (Barry) Eliker of Greenville; Clyde (Chris) Bateman of New Weston; and Rae Jean (Kenny) Govier of The Villages, FL; as well as his in-laws: Billie and JoAnn Mangas of Union City, IN, and Larry (Carol) Mangas of Union City, IN, numerous nieces and nephews, who loved him dearly, and by his close friend, Marita Runkle, who was like a daughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Junior and Florence Bateman; his first wife, Sharon (Whitesel) Bateman; and his great-grandson, Kason Trantanella.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 30, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Harrisville Congregational Christian Church, 4900 East South Street, Harrisville, IN 47390. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will take place at Lisbon Cemetery.
