Leonard Allen Wheeler, known affectionally as Len, passed away on June 21, 2024, at the age of 93 in Greenville, Ohio. Born on November 10, 1930, in Zanesville, Ohio, Len dedicated a significant part of his life to serving his country and his community.
Len's military career spanned over two decades, from 1946 to 1967, during which he served in the Air Force. Notably, he was a crew chief in the Strategic Air Command, responsible for the maintenance and operation of the B-52 Stratofortress aircraft. He proudly served as the first crew chief for the Lady Altus, based in Altus AFB Oklahoma, marking a significant milestone in his career. His career in the Air Force took him to many countries and cultures. He was based in the UK for many years where he married his beloved wife, Maureen. His love of travel and curiosity of different cultures remained with him his entire life.
After retiring from the Air Force, Len's career took him back to the UK and then to the US, where he continued to work until his second retirement. Following this, he founded Wheeler’s Locksmith in Union City, providing invaluable services to the local community and surrounding areas.
Len was also a long-serving and dedicated member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served many years as part of the Honor Guard at the American Legion in Union City.
Len is survived by his loving children: Linda Aberle of Union City IN, Lorraine Wheeler of Winchester IN, Dean Wheeler of Greenwood IN, and Tiz (Al) Gallatin of Greenville OH; 6 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maureen Wheeler (nee Burns) and Scott Wheeler (son).
Reichard’s Funeral Home in Union City, Indiana, is assisting the family with arrangements. Len's life and service will be remembered fondly by all who knew him, both in and out of uniform. His dedication to his country and community will not be forgotten.
The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday June 29, 2024, at Reichard Funeral Home 400 W. Deerfield Road Union City, IN.
Immediately following the time of visitation, a Funeral Service to celebrate Leonard’s life will begin at 1:00 pm. The burial will take place at Union City Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
