Jeanette I. Detling

Jeanette I. Detling, 91 of Union City, OH passed away on February 25, 2024, at Brethren Retirement Community surrounded by her loving family.   She was born on January 20, 1933, in Randolph County to the late Alva H. and Nina Welch Weiss.   She met her husband of 69 years Richard Detling in her junior year of high school while sitting for the state of Ohio scholastic test at Miami University.

Jeanette was a 1951 graduate of Jackson School in Union City, OH and was Valedictorian of her class. She and Richard enrolled at Miami University in 1951 and were married at the beginning of their senior year on September 11, 1954. For over 50 years Jeanette was an integral part of Detling Farms and the tomato growing business.  She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Union City, IN where she was a member of the choir as well as an elder and Sunday School teacher.  She was active in the Ohio Farm Bureau and was an advisor with the Jackson friendship 4-H Club.

Survivors include her husband Richard of Union City, OH, children; Rex Detling of Greenville, OH, James (Rebecca) Detling of Greenville, OH, Lisa (Lenny) Wright of Ponte Vedra FL, grandchildren; Abby (John) Allbritton, Ryan Detling, Elyse (Joe) Brown, Chelsea Detling, Robby (Alexis) Detling, Andy (Olivia) Detling, Annie Wright, Natalie Milligan, and Graham Milligan, and 7 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her sister Marlene Livingston, daughter in law Christine “Chris” Detling, grandchildren Sarah Beth Wright, and Spencer Wright.

The family is grateful for all the care Jeanette received at Trustwell Living, Oakley Place and the Brethren Home Retirement Center. 

Visitation will take place on Thursday February 29, 2024, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am at Trinity Lutheran Church 1470 IN-28, Union City, IN. Funeral Services will begin at 11:30 am. Graveside services to follow at Greenville Township cemetery.
