Linda Sue Hobson Stemmer, distinguished attorney, loving mother, grandmother, sister, friend and colleague passed away on July 13, 2018, surrounded by loved ones. She was born on July 15, 1951, in Union City, IN, where she attended Union City Community High School, and graduated as class valedictorian in 1969. Three years later she received her bachelor’s degree from Purdue University with a double major in sociology and psychology. Linda went on to attend the School of Law at Indiana University earning a doctor of jurisprudence in 1978, and subsequently passed both the Indiana and Ohio state bar exams. She began to practice law at McCoy and Husmann in Union City, which established her as the first female attorney within five counties. Linda became a partner in the firm just four short years later. This year marked her 40thanniversary in a practice where her compassion, experience and dedication helped her to guide families through extremely difficult times.  In addition to her career in family law, Linda was the City Attorney for Union City, IN, for twenty-five years, secretary of the Randolph County Bar Association, and was honored to argue a case before the Indiana Supreme Court.

Following graduation from Purdue, Linda married Richard L. Stemmer from Union City, OH. Together they had two children, Ryan and Kathleen, but were divorced when the children were

young. Committed as she was to her work, Linda’s most precious experiences were with her children and grandchildren, whom she treasured beyond measure. She was an avid reader with a passion for words, giving books to strangers and friends alike. She will forever be remembered for her generous spirit, her soulful laugh, and her love of family and work.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents Carl L. Hobson and Delores E. Rush Hobson Halley. She is survived by her son Ryan Stemmer (Danielle) and her daughter Kathleen Brandenburg (Ryan) both of Winchester, IN; and six grandchildren Gage, Baylea, and Gavin Stemmer, Kaylee and Gage Mills, and Will Brandenburg. She is also survived by two brothers, Ronald Hobson (Donna), Cincinnati, OH; and David Hobson (Karla), Economy, IN; and two sisters Sandra Hobson Casmey (Howard), Vienna, VA; Carol Hobson Christie (Ken), Fishers, IN; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate Linda’s life will be held at Reichard Funeral Home in Union City on August 11, 2018, at 4:00 pm with visitation preceding the service from 1:00 to 3:30 pm. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers the family suggests making donations to the Union City Public Library or the Randolph County Art Association or reading a good book and passing it along to a friend or learning a new word and using it in conversation or going for a walk and picking up litter along the way to make the world a more beautiful place because Linda surely did.

Linda made such an impact on my life. We were able to share our love of books and a nice conversation on many occasions. She was a regular where I used to waitress and she would spend many late evenings unwinding from her day while sharing her wisdom. She was strong, compassionate and kind. She will be very missed. Sending much love to her wonderful family.

Linda was one of my best friends all during our days at UCCHS, & we were the two Honored Queens of Job’s Daughters during our senior year. We both grew in our public speaking & leadership skills. I was very shocked to learn of her sudden illness & untimely death. It was good that we’d been reunited in recent years with other female classmates & had dinner together shortly before her death. I will always remember her for our shared interests, such as reading. Thank you for suggesting contributions may be made to the Union City Public Library. My prayers are for all of Linda’s family, & I have many treasured memories. Love & hugs. Ann Dorrington Kingston

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I first met Linda in church when we were very young. She was sure a bright light everywhere she went. She helped me as a lawyer later. Since we lived in different states, I never saw her much, but thanks to Facebook, I could see her children and grandchildren. It was very obvious how much she loved them. God has a new angel and you have a guardian angel. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I didn't have the pleasure of knowing Linda for very long. We met for the first time, I thought, near the end of February, 2018, shortly after the passing of my mother, Doris De Bolt. In our initial discussions, we or maybe I should say I (Linda was ahead of me on this) discovered that our parents lived only 3 or 4 miles apart and that I knew her mother very well from school and that I rode the school bus with Linda's older sister and maybe even with Linda, herself. In such a short time, these revelations and discussions led to a short but great friendship both professionally and non-professionally. In that short time, I discovered that Linda was a very thoughtful, sincere, and caring person. A person who loved her family and her work. A person who I could trust and sit and talk to for hours about the many different facets of life. I will always remember her filing system, her smile, and in our last visit of her reminding me of "you never know what life will bring us". God speed, Linda. With deepest regrets and much sympathy to her entire family. My sincere apologies for not being able to attend the memorial service. Unfortunately, I have arrangements in Michigan on the weekend which I cannot avoid attending. My sincere apologies again along with my heartfelt loss in Linda's passing. David
